Our approach

As a carbon-neutral port, we believe responsible decommissioning and the circular economy go hand-in-hand and are essential to decarbonising our resource industry. We’re committed to ensuring best-practice environmental and safety standards are met at all times.

With advanced in-house capabilities and strategic partnerships to augment our capability, we’ve created a comprehensive, sustainable, and efficient decommissioning offering.

Our proximity to maturing assets in the Carnarvon Basin, large wharf-side areas for exclusive project use and flexible approach positions OMSB well to service the growing number of decommissioning projects.

We also hold Dangerous Goods licenses to handle and store dangerous goods on site for up to 90 days if required.

Case Study

Thevenard Island onshore decommissioning & remediation project

In 2021, Liberty Industrial began Chevron Australia’s Thevenard Island onshore remediation project. The scope commenced with the use of Liberty Industrial’s custom-built 120-tonne high-reach excavator to safely and efficiently demolish three oil storage tanks, each weighing 1,430 tonnes.

A heavy-duty shear attachment was used to cut the tanks into manageable sections, which were then loaded into skip bins.

Our landing craft tanker infrastructure enabled a marine contractor to efficiently transport steel scrap from Thevenard Island (22km offshore) to OMSB. The project required regular port calls to deliver materials for decommissioning, including fuel provision, gas cylinders and consumables to support ongoing operations on Thevenard Island.

Access to our residential stevedoring workforce meant that Liberty Industrial was able to minimise labour mobilisation and demobilisation costs.

We also established a segregated, decommissioned steel area at the port with a capacity of 5,000 tonnes to accommodate incoming steel safely, providing exclusive storage for the duration of the project (including hazardous material and dangerous goods.

The next stage of this ground-breaking project commenced in late 2023 and supports the decommissioning of offshore infrastructure.  OMSB is proud to continue our working partnership with Liberty Industrial and establish Onslow as a service centre for the decommissioning sector.
